The short answer
Most guides put a basement finish at about 3 to 8 weeks for a 1,000 square foot basement, and up to 16 weeks when there are bathrooms, a kitchen or a lot of rooms. Alpha Homes usually takes a bare 2,000 square foot basement from concrete walls to finished in about 3 weeks.
What the big guides say
Ask three websites and you get three answers. Here is what the biggest home cost guides say about a basement finished by a pro crew.
| Source | How long | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Angi (2026) | 3 to 8 weeks, 5 on average | Based on a 1,000 sq ft basement. Angi says 2 weeks or more than 12 both happen. |
| HomeGuide (2026) | 4 to 16 weeks | Depends on the number of rooms, the size and the scope. |
| This Old House (2026) | About 6 to 12 weeks in all | 1 to 2 weeks to plan, 4 to 8 weeks to build, 1 to 2 weeks to finish. |
Notice the size. Angi's numbers are for 1,000 square feet and it says bigger basements will likely take longer. The Alpha Homes number further down is for a basement twice that size.
Where the weeks go
A basement is built in steps, and most steps have to wait for the one before it. Angi breaks a 1,000 square foot basement down like this:
| Step | Days |
|---|---|
| Framing the walls | 3 to 6 |
| Wiring, plumbing and heating ducts (the "rough-in") | 3 to 7 |
| Insulation | 1 to 3 |
| Drywall, tape and mud, with dry time | 5 to 16 |
| Doors and trim | 2 to 6 |
| Paint | 2 to 4 |
| Flooring | 2 to 4 |
| Fixtures and last touches | 1 to 5 |
Drywall is the longest step. The mud has to dry before the next coat goes on, and you cannot rush drying.
What slows a basement down
- Waiting on other trades. Angi says the more subcontractors a job uses, the more likely it is to add days or even weeks.
- Waiting on inspections. Work stops until the inspector signs off on each stage.
- Bigger scope. A full bathroom plus a kitchen can add several weeks, according to Angi. So can custom cabinets.
Permits and inspections in Sandy
Sandy has its own permit for this job, called a basement finish permit. You apply online through the city's Cityworks portal, with plans for the layout, wiring, plumbing and heating.
Two Utah rules help keep things moving. Since November 2025, state law says a city must finish plan review on a home project within 14 business days, after a 3 business day screening. And Sandy says state law gives the city 3 business days to do a building inspection. Inspections need to be booked at least 24 hours ahead, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A permit is not a step to skip. Sandy charges an investigation fee equal to the permit fee for work done without one.
How Alpha Homes finishes one in about 3 weeks
A bare 2,000 square foot basement, with nothing framed yet, usually takes Tanner's crew about 3 weeks. That is faster than every range above, so here is how.
- The plan and permit come first. The paperwork is handled up front, so the crew does not stop and wait on it.
- Inspections are booked ahead. Each one is on the calendar before the crew needs it.
- The subs are lined up before day one. Electrical, plumbing and heating show up in order, not when they get around to it.
- One crew runs the whole job. You have one person to call: Tanner.
A bathroom, a wet bar, a kitchen or a walkout door adds time. Tanner gives you a real schedule at the walkthrough, before you sign anything.
"Tanner and his team were amazingly quick and completed both of our bathrooms in only two weeks"Anna Kinne, Google review
